1001 Afternoons in Chicago is a book of columns by Ben Hecht that originally appeared in the Chicago Daily News in the early 1920s. Although Hecht would go on to acheive great success as a screenwriter and novelist, many consider these early pieces of journalism to be his best work. These stories paint a remarkable portrait of all walks of life in Chicago, especially the characters and the bustle of street life. The appeal of these stories lies in Hecht's ability to write about everyday life with insight and great empathy. The best of these stories are transcendant.

The original 1922 printing was illustrated throughout by Herman Rosse, with pen and ink.
